To join the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in India, you typically need to clear competitive examinations conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) or the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
There are different ways to enter CBI, depending on the post you are targeting.
1. For Sub-Inspector (SI) in CBI:
Exam: SSC Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Exam
Eligibility:
Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
Age: 20-30 years (relaxation for reserved categories).
Selection Process:
SSC CGL Tier 1 (Objective)
SSC CGL Tier 2 (Objective)
SSC CGL Tier 3 (Descriptive)
SSC CGL Tier 4 (Skill Test/Document Verification)
Physical Test (for SI in CBI only)
2. For Group A Officers (DSP, SP, Jt. Director, etc.):
Exam: UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE)
Eligibility:
Must clear UPSC CSE and get selected for the Indian Police Service (IPS) or Indian Revenue Service (IRS).
After a few years of service, IPS/IRS officers can be deputed to CBI.
3. For Legal Officers, Forensic Experts & Consultants:
Recruitment is done through contract-based hiring or departmental promotions.
Candidates with Law (LLB), Forensic Science, or specialized technical qualifications can apply when vacancies are announced.
4. For Officers Through Internal Promotions:
Candidates from state police forces and other government departments can be promoted or deputed to CBI.

Physical fitness is important for SI and IPS-level posts.
